Pregnancy Planning 101 — What to Do Before You Try to Conceive
The moment you decide you want to start a family, the journey begins — even before conception. Most couples focus on what to do during pregnancy, but the months leading up to it are just as important. A little preparation can make a huge difference to both the mother's health and the baby's development.
Start With a Pre-Conception Check-Up
A visit to your gynaecologist before you start trying to conceive is one of the most valuable things you can do. This appointment typically covers:
- A review of your medical history and any existing conditions
- Blood tests to check for anaemia, thyroid levels, blood sugar, and immunity (rubella, chickenpox)
- A Pap smear if you're due for one
- Discussion of any medications that may need to be adjusted
- Screening for infections or STIs
Lifestyle Matters More Than You Think
Your body is preparing an environment for a new life. The healthier that environment, the better.
- Start taking folic acid (at least 400 mcg daily) at least 3 months before you try to conceive — it significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects
- Aim for a healthy weight — both low and high BMI can affect ovulation and fertility
- Reduce or quit smoking and alcohol
- Manage any chronic conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders with your doctor's guidance
A Word on Timing and Fertility
Understanding your cycle is fundamental. Ovulation typically happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, but this varies. Your fertile window is roughly 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself.
